Whether it’s an action thriller on a Friday night or a feel-good rom-com on a Sunday afternoon, nothing beats a great movie. So the list of streaming giant Netflix and its feature-length flicks proves to be very useful – there is always something to watch when you are in the mood for a movie.

Although movies are finally reopening as we approach the backend of this lockdown (while hopefully) movie-goers may not get too big movies while social distance measures are still in place and continue to rely on services like Netflix. More for their entertainment needs.

With this in mind, we have put together our top image options from the platform to stop you from choosing something to watch for most of your evening. From psychological thrillers and rib-tickling comedies to Hollywood classics and superhero flicks – there is something for everyone.

The Green Mile (1999)

Star cast:  Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, David Morse

Top 10 Netflix movies to watch in 2020

In this 1930 crime drama, Tom Hanks plays the executioner Paul Edzecomb, who befriends the convicted black prisoner John Coffee (Michael Clark Duncan), who is sentenced to death for the murder of two children.

Adapted from Stephen King’s 1996 novel, The Green Mile is an attempt to mentally execute the death with a psychic twist and grasp it from director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption).

The play is a must-see and as misunderstood and delicate coffee with the heartbreaking performance of the late Michael Clark Duncan, it is impossible to leave the film without tears.

Star cast:  Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Kenneth Williams

A free black man living in New York before the Civil War is abducted and sold into slavery. He clings to the desperate hope of returning to his family and spends the next 12 years trying to maintain his dignity in the face of brutal treatment. This Oscar-winning historical play based on the autobiography of Solomon Northup, starring Chivetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Brad Pitt, is not easy to watch but gets five stars from us.

The Irishman (2019)

Star cast:  Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci

Director: Martin Scorsese

IMDb: 7.9 / 10

Top 10 Netflix movies to watch in 2020

Martin Scorsese, director of The Irish Person of Netflix, sees a reunion with Robert De Niro for their ninth collaboration. Gangster biopic centers on Frank “The Irish” Sheeran (De Niro) recalls his involvement in the disappearance of his longtime friend Jimmy Hofa (played by Al Pacino). The film was constantly in the news until its release; From its CGI de-aging used in de Niro, Pacino and Joe Pesci, to the shallow length of this epic (which is 3 hours 30 minutes, so you need plenty of popcorn).

Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Star cast:  Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Jared Leto

Director: Jean-Marc Vallée

IMDb: 8.0 / 10

Dallas Buyers Club was an interesting journey and look into the lives of patients during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto’s acting throughout the movie was phenomenal, and I was impressed at the way they could convey the raw emotions of their characters.

The first part of the movie is about the desperation of Ron Woodroof, after finding out he is HIV positive, he embarks on a journey for his own survival. It was depressing to see his emotions of anger, sadness, and regret. However, as the story continues and he creates the Dallas Buyers Club, Woodroof finds meaning in his struggle and he commits to helping others to continue finding happiness and living their lives despite their condition.

Marriage Story (2019)

Star cast: Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, Julia Greer

Director:  Noah Baumbach

IMDb: 8.0 / 10

Top 10 Netflix movies to watch in 2020

On its face, the marriage story should not be such a delightful watch, it is about a relationship and all the emotions that come with it. Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver played the couple who decided to divorce in this award-winning masterpiece from writer/director Noah Bombach and have had some of the best performances of their careers, which deserves more awards attention than they ever received.

It makes you laugh, smile and if you get married, it will make you pray that you will never get divorced.

Da 5 Bloods (2020)

Star cast:  Delroy Lindo, Jonathan Majors, Clarke Peters

Director: Spike Lee

IMDb: 6.6 / 10

The latest Spike Lee picture seems to have flown under the radar somewhat, but that’s a crying shame as it truly is a superb and timely watch.

Da 5 Bloods follows a group of Vietnam war veterans as they return to the country in the present day, searching for the remains of their fallen commander and the treasure he left behind. It’s an emotional journey that will see them confront their traumatic memories of the brutal conflict and the men it turned them into, while also exploring broader themes about the experiences of black people in the United States.

Delroy Lindo (The Good Fight), Clarke Peters (The Wire), Norm Lewis (Scandal), Isiah Whitlock Jr (BlacKkKlansman) and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) play the original Bloods, with Jonathan Majors representing the next generation. It’s a fantastic ensemble cast that provides strong performances across the board, some of which could well be recognized during this year’s awards season – so get ahead of the curve and watch Da 5 Bloods now.

Extraction (2020)

Star cast: Chris Hemsworth, Bryon Lerum, Ryder Lerum

Director: Sam Hargrave

IMDb: 6.7 / 10

Top 10 Netflix movies to watch in 2020

The recently released action movie Netflix has become very popular and the second installment is already in the works. From first-time feature director Sam Hargrave, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo are executive producers (and Joe also wrote the script), starring Chris Hemsworth of abstract Thor and telling the story of black-market hire Tyler Rake. The drug lord is sent to Bangladesh to rescue his kidnapped son. It was a tense, fine pace, a stellar vehicle for Hemsworth, and had the right amount of real exciting action to keep most spectators firmly in their seats.

Always Be My Maybe (2019)

Star cast:  Ali Wong, Randall Park, James Saito

Director: Nahnatchka Khan

IMDb: 6.8 / 10

This is named after Maria Carey’s song, this Netflix rom-com deserves to be seen only for its dynamite soundtrack, which features D’Angelo, David Bowie, and Lizzo.

The film focuses on two childhood friends (who also played Randall Park and Ali Wang), who reunite 16 years after they lost their virginity to each other. Look for the amazing and shocking cameo none other than Keanu Reeves, John Wick.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)

Star cast:  Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, Janel Parrish

Director:  Susan Johnson

IMDb: 7.1 / 10

A sweet, strictly executed romcom that serves as a tribute to the best films of the genre since the 1980s and 90s. Lana Condor starred as Laura Jean Covey, a Korean-American high school student whose world was turned upside down when a box of private love letters she wrote to Crush was delivered to its intended recipients. Based on the YA trilogy by Jenny Hahn, it became one of Netflix’s most successful original films of 2018. For a break-out performance from Noah Sentinel (as Peter Kavinsky) on the Mini Mark Rufa.

Spy (2015)

Star cast: Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jude Law

Director:  Paul Feig

IMDb: 7.0 / 10

Top 10 Netflix movies to watch in 2020

It is fair to say that Melissa McCarthy comedies have been hit and missed, with more misses in recent years, Spy stands out as one of her exciting success stories. She joins bridesmaid director Paul Figg for this story about a desk-bound CIA employee who is pushed into dangerous fieldwork when her partner is killed and other active agents are in danger. Mission: Impossible-style action film, along with McCarthy, is really hilarious in a superbly used supporting role with Jason Statham.
